From my first conversation with João and Luís, I learned how they do so much more than just run a bakery. Their weeks are spent tending to the family farm an hour outside Porto and they use their weekends to put their heart and soul into their cafe. They are exactly the kind of small business I desperately want to see succeed. They care only about using the finest ingredients to make the best-possible products and they refuse to cut corners. Their focaccia is the best I've ever had and I buy a sheet every weekend!
Belo Farelo opened in August 2022 in a quiet residential stretch of Lapa, founded by João Barros and Luís Igreja. Bread and pastries are made with long natural fermentation using a sourdough starter and stone-ground flours, and the entire production is artisanal and 100% plant-based.
